Administration Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
