Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Days After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has stated.

Last Thursday Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was not "needed".

The administration declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pushed him to cede significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president supported a truce plan backed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the war on the present positions.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would only amount to a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president commented conversations concerning the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of speculation that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he remarked.
