  • Researchers report that intermittent fasting of below 24 hours does not appear to impair a person’s cognitive function during the periods where they are not eating.
  • Experts claim the human body has adjusted to abstinence periods by consuming fat as an power supply.
  • Previous studies has shown that brief fasting can aid individuals reduce weight, improve insulin sensitivity, and decrease inflammation.

Intermittent fasting does not appear to impair a human mental sharpness during times when they are abstaining from food, per a recent research.

Short-term Fasting Improbable to Impact Mental Performance

Scientists indicate in their web-based study, published in scientific journal, that temporary fasting of below 24 hours does not impact the brain power of adults.

"Adults often fret that if they go without eating they will be unable to pay attention at work or learn efficiently," commented a cognitive expert through release. "This research indicate that, for most adults, temporary fasting is improbable to have a significant impact on cognitive performance," the researcher noted.

Experts observed that children and teenagers did exhibit some decline of cognitive abilities while fasting. That strengthened the value of having a nutritious breakfast before school.

In addition, the scientists noted that grown individuals who fast tend to perform worse in tests later in the day. They suggested the lack of food may intensify natural dips in internal timing.

"Humans adapted with times of food scarcity, so it stands to reason our cognitive systems can perform adequately without regular nourishment," the researcher said. "However, minors and youth appear more at risk, which corresponds to what we understand about their substantial nutritional needs."

Biological System Takes from Other Fuel Sources during Fasting

The systematic study incorporated 63 investigations from globally, involving more than 3,400 subjects.

The majority of subjects commonly abstained from food for between 8 hours and 24 hours, with a median time without food of 12 hours.

The researchers concluded that fasting "neither boosts nor reduces brain power." They did point out three considerations that can influence brain performance:

  • length of abstinence
  • context of the mental assessment
  • unique factors (i.e. age and physique)

In particular, scientists noted that individuals tend to perform worse on cognitive assessments near the end of their abstinence interval.

"These findings suggest that although many people need not worry about temporary fasting influencing their cognitive performance, implementation across specific populations and situations may demand more detailed assessment," the researchers wrote.

Researchers said that glycogen, the primary accumulated type of glucose, functions as the main energy source for individuals who consume food routinely throughout the day.

Researchers noted glycogen levels may drop while a subject is going without eating, but the biological system finds alternative fuel sources, such as ketones, that are generated from adipose tissue.

"This metabolic flexibility probably facilitated survival during eras of nutritional shortage, especially before the arrival of successful dietary conservation approaches," the experts commented.

The researchers stated that this primordial development in the biological system continues to serve people well.

"Comparative biological evidence and adaptation models indicate that people developed improved adipose retention ability as an adaptive response to nutritional variations," the experts explained.

"This power bank not just supported everyday energy needs but also allowed the continuous evolution and growth of the cerebrum, which needs substantial energy input," they continued.

Advantages of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is described as a dietary pattern that switches between intervals of eating and periods of abstaining from food.

Many periodic fasting regimens don’t focus on what a subject eats. The emphasis is on at what times they eat.

There are several common abstinence approaches. They include:

  • 16/8: This involves an eight-hour nutrition window and a 16-hour time without food. Various subjects follow this by skipping breakfast, while different people reverse the approach by avoiding dinner or consuming it sooner.
  • 5:2: This approach involves consuming merely 500 to 600 energy units on two separate days of the week and then consuming regular meals the other 5 days.
  • Eat Stop Eat: This plan includes abstaining from food for 24 hours periodically a week.

Fasting can be effective because of how the physiology adapts to an extended period of time without food. As an illustration:

  • Going without eating induces an elevation in HGH, which in turn induces weight reduction and muscle growth.
  • Fasting can also improve hormone response and decrease insulin levels, making reserve lipids more accessible.
  • Moreover, going without eating can trigger the process of biological maintenance. This restoration can incorporate autophagy, in which tissue components process and remove aged and malfunctioning biological compounds that accumulate inside them.
"Fasting fundamentally switches the biological system into the mode of fat burning," an expert clarified.
