Fury Surges as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Rebuke

Figures from across the partisan spectrum and the entertainment industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Statement

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Detention

Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was swift and harsh.

This is a vile and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Rebuke from Within Political Ranks

A number of Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of another political figure.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
