International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Recovery for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that its representatives joined members of Hamas into zones of the Gaza Strip still under Israeli military control to facilitate the hunt for the bodies of Israeli hostages.

Truce Agreements and Captive Bodies Return

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on 10 October, the group is required to return the remains of all Israeli hostages promptly. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has agreed to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

The organization has to date handed back the bodies of fifteen of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as some of those bodies are thought to be in areas past the ceasefire boundary designating the temporary truce line.

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the Red Cross accompanied a participant in the hostilities as the party looked for the bodies of the deceased individuals beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” said a representative for the organization.

The spokesperson continued: “The parties to the conflict established the modalities of the operation and entrusted the Red Cross to act as a neutral intermediary. We was had no part in those negotiations.”

The official additionally explained: “Our team was not involved in the search for the deceased nor does it take part in the physical recovery of human remains.”

US Demand and Regional Search Efforts

On Saturday, the US president delivered a two-day ultimatum to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to begin handing over the bodies of the hostages who died, including American citizens, quickly, or the other countries involved in this great peace will take action,” he posted on his social‑media platform.

As the two-day window neared, the group, joined by the Red Cross, joined teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israel to search for bodies past the boundary marking the withdrawal of troops inside the territory. An Israeli spokesperson said the Egyptian team would use excavator machines and trucks in the operation.

The news was supported by an source within Israel, who told local press that members of the group had been allowed to access sections of Gaza under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to look for the remains of hostages, alongside Egyptian and ICRC personnel.

The search for the bodies of Israeli hostages has become one of the most sensitive matters in the ceasefire reached between the parties. Yet, the effort to locate the remains has been challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an approximate 60m tonnes of rubble across the strip, where, as per health officials, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as missing, trapped under the rubble.

Diverging Claims on Body Whereabouts

The group has claimed it does not know the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its teams that had been detaining the captives and were reportedly eliminated during military strikes.

In contrast, an official representative asserted that the organization was aware of the whereabouts of the bodies. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our hostages,” the official said.

American Position and Weapons Surrender Talks

Although the American leader has acknowledged that some of the bodies are hard to access, he said that “the rest they can return now and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”

“It may have to do with the surrender of weapons of the group,” he added.

The US administration has said it has obtained assurances from Hamas that the group will surrender its arms, though no specific schedule has been established. They remains reluctant to surrender its arms without solid assurances about the future of its fighters.
