New Year Celebrants Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Expected Across the UK
Forecasters are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the weather service.
Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, so extra layers essential, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Transport is expected to be impacted.
- People are advised to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.
Temperatures Forecast to Fall Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Advisories Released
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities stated this indicated the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is completely essential.
