The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined initialism surfaced a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals like child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for physicians to attend to a young patient who has lost their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that violations are still being committed. Officials disputes these accusations, just as it refutes each claim it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Show Goes On Amidst Profound Human Cost
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
