The Flop That Finally Flew: The Reason Behind the 40-Year Wait for Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along Musical to Become a Hit?

In my role as reviewer, I've made plenty of errors to experience quiet satisfaction when an opinion stands the test of time. During 1981, I wrote excitedly about Sondheim's latest theatrical creation which I attended during previews in New York. Panned by professional reviewers and avoided by audiences, the production shut down shortly after its premiere. Fast forward to 2023-24, this identical production completed a twelve-month Broadway run, received four Tony recognitions and received glowing reviews.

Transforming a Classic

While I say "this being the identical show, the statement requires qualification. Adapted from a Depression-era work by the legendary playwright duo, it still presents the consistent plot presented backwards through time. The plot examines dissolving relationships revolving around an ambitious musician and movie producer known as Franklin Shepard. As the show progresses, he looks back across his years and observes how time has eroded both his creative partnership with playwright Charley and their mutual friendship with author Mary.

Artistic Revisions

Following the production's failure in 1981, the creative team undertook numerous modifications. The show doesn't start with a youthful melody written by Franklin but instead begins with a gaudy party celebrating his latest movie success. The approach to casting experienced change. The original 1981 cast consisted of fresh-faced performers who started by simulating older individuals and transitioned smoothly into younger characterizations during the show's duration. Modern stagings commonly employ experienced performers who portray various life stages using subtle changes.

The virtue of the narrative exists in its potential to impact variously for each viewer. Similar to other reverse-chronology works, the performance reveals the unavoidable aspects of existence concessions, modifications and emotional depletion.

Sondheim's Creative Genius

This outstanding musical highlights the artist discreetly settling scores toward his naysayers. There's a delightful moment where a Broadway producer admonishes the youthful protagonists about the necessity to compose catchy songs in musical productions, adding the memorable line: "You'll hear from me if Strandever creates a popular work." The ultimate irony exists because that Merrily We Roll Along genuinely includes numerous treasurable tunes featuring Old Friends, Good Thing Going and the signature song which transformed into lasting earworms with dedicated viewers.

Character Interpretation

Where one might find a reasonable objection against Merrily, it relates to the central figure Franklin failing to engage emotionally. Yet, in this production, the principal actor thoughtfully represents Franklin not as a narcissistic villain but instead as a fated naif who navigates life repeatedly picking the easiest option. The supporting cast excellently embody Mary's unfulfilled romantic longings, with the most remarkable portrayal comes from the actor playing Charley, who lends the character both nervous tension and fervent faith in creative expression's ability to improve lives.

Continuing Influence

Whether Merrily itself achieves this transformation stays with viewers to subjectively judge. The current production offers ongoing delight and clearly demonstrates specifically what made a celebrated disaster has transformed into an undeniable success. The recorded production of this praised interpretation offers audiences the chance to experience this remarkable transformation for themselves.
