The former vice-president Speculates Whether Pressure from Trump Prompted Bill Gates' Environmental Reversal

The climate advocate has speculated that fear of facing pressure from Donald Trump may have led the Microsoft founder to retreat on his climate crisis position.

Describing Trump as “an exceptionally unethical commander-in-chief”, Gore alerted that the president’s endorsement of oil and gas and withdrawal from clean power is “significantly hurting” the U.S. economy.

Environmental Harm and Financial Consequences

In an discussion at the Cop30 United Nations climate summit, Gore stated, “Trump’s currently causing a lot of damage on the climate. Perhaps the biggest harm he’s doing is to the United States itself.”

He emphasized that China is now exporting green technology with a cumulative export value that outstrips all oil and gas shipments from the U.S., a pattern that is accelerating quite dramatically.

The Philanthropist’s Surprising Reversal

Bill Gates, previously a prominent voice in climate action, recently suggested for moving the climate crisis to a lower priority, to focus on health issues.

Gore expressed bewilderment at this change, saying, “The notion of delaying on climate further surprised environmental experts that I know and respect.”

“Yeah, Trump loves it. That may be what the billionaire aimed at.”

Gore observed that after Trump’s re-election, Gates let go of the majority of his environmental team, visited the presidential residence, and offered compliments on Trump.

Fear of Reprisal

Gore proposed that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be fearful of facing retaliation by Trump. “It may be that he is genuinely concerned that Trump will bully him,” Gore stated.

Trump responded to Gates’ change of heart with supportive online comments.

Gore added, “The sole positive feedback of what he released last week was from the president. Yes, he approves. That may be what Gates was shooting for.”

Challenging a Misleading Dichotomy

Gore emphasized that presenting the environmental challenge and global health crisis as opposing choices is misguided.

“The idea that there is a binary choice between wellness and the environment has been roundly rejected by virtually every scientist in this field,” he said.

“It’s literally insane that nations are forcing citizens to subsidise the damage of part of humanity’s future.”

Gore highlighted that the prestigious medical journal published a report on the same day as Gates’ statement, detailing the enormous health consequences of inaction on climate.

Advocating for Smarter Investments

Instead of diverting funds from environmental initiatives, Gore suggested that Gates should advocate for repurposing the massive sums spent on oil and gas support toward health and environmental innovations.

“Accelerating solutions to the climate crisis is one of the single most effective ways to enhance wellness in the world,” he declared.

Defending the UN Climate Process

Gore robustly defended the UN climate conference process, noting that they accomplish far more than they are recognized for.

“The Cop process serves as a focal point for industry and NGO groups that gather every year,” he said. “Many of them come up with their own deals that advance progress.”

“The Cop process itself is one of the key factors that the green transition has shifted into high gear.”

He added that industries and governments are moving forward with innovations and adopting renewable energy and other low-carbon initiatives.

Optimistic Trends and Shifting Attitudes

Gore celebrated what he sees as a “shift in attitudes” in the United States, with numerous citizens embracing climate action even as the federal government dismantles them.

He warned that Trump might face a “less obsequious” Congress following recent voting losses for Republican candidates.

“It’s entirely mistaken circulating that somehow we are losing ground.”

Gore commended Zohran Mamdani for his effective campaign for mayor of New York, noting that while he disagreed with some of his ideas, his political skills were remarkably evident.

Highlighting Climate Impacts

At the conference, Gore showed delegates with a visual presentation of devastation linked to the environmental emergency.

Standing before a huge projection screen showing images of recent disasters exacerbated by climate change, Gore declared, “It’s completely irrational that we are letting this persist.”

He raised his voice while displaying visuals of record drought in the Amazon, melting polar ice, and devastating weather in Vietnam, the Caribbean, Brazil, the Philippines, and the United States.

“How long are we going to stand by and keep increasing temperatures so that these types of disasters get even worse?” he asked.

Adaptation, Mitigation, and Realism

Gore emphasized the need to both adapt and mitigate, but warned that if this irrational behavior continues—treating the atmosphere as a dump—some impacts will be very difficult to cope with.

Promoting Climate Trace

His primary effort at the conference has been to advocate for the emissions mapping initiative, which monitors planet-heating emissions and harmful substances leading to health problems worldwide.

“We are very excited about these innovative technologies,” Gore stated. “We possess the tools and the implementation strategies. A few individuals think we don’t have the government commitment, but as I like to remind people, determination is a replenishable asset.”
