In a recent development, Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has disclosed that Washington has presented a proposed peace plan featuring security guarantees for the country lasting for a period of a decade and a half.
The Framework's Specifics
Zelenskyy stated that in the course of significant talks with American leader President Trump, he had asked for security guarantees for a duration of 50 years. Yet, the current draft envisions a shorter guarantee of one and a half decades from Washington.
The specifics remain undefined what these assurances would assume, but the Ukrainian leader has been insisting on "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, referring to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's key doctrine that an assault against a single ally is considered an attack on all.
Negotiation Developments
Zelenskyy has said, Washington's protection assurances for Ukraine under the updated settlement framework have been 100% agreed, although the US President offered a more guarded assessment, estimating the agreement at more like 95%.
Each statesman affirmed that advancements were achieved during the Florida talks. President Trump did note, however that there were "one or two tough" outstanding issues, including over territory.
Conditions for Russian Talks
On another front, the Ukrainian President stated to reporters that a meeting with Russia would be feasible after the American and European allies endorsed a settlement proposal from Ukraine to conclude the conflict.
This statement comes after the US President stated publicly that he believed a trilateral meeting between Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington could happen once the timing is appropriate.
Background of Engagements
The Ukrainian and Russian presidents have been without a summit since December 2019. That previous engagement, mediated by the French and German heads of state, was intended to renew efforts to end the ongoing conflict.
More recently, in the spring of 2025, the Russian president opted not to attend talks in Turkey for a proposed meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, dismissing a face-to-face meeting suggestion to discuss peace in Istanbul.
Key Sticking Points
A key sticking point continues to be the status of the Donbas area in eastern Ukraine. The US President indicated that a plan to turn the territory, which is predominantly held by Moscow's forces, into a DMZ remains "unresolved".
Trump further commented that it will be apparent in a matter of weeks if the hostilities can cease.
The involved parties have underscored that the lengthy peace talks would persist as they work towards a final resolution to the multi-year conflict.
