What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
